亚洲相互协作与信任措施会议（CICA）第四次峰会于2014年5月20至21日在上海顺利召开。在世界的目光汇聚到上海之时，共有719名志愿者，在这场外交盛会的台前幕后、各个细碎复杂的岗位上坚守着，为亚信峰会的成功举办尽了一份力。
本次亚信峰会的志愿者团队中，上岗志愿者共有719人，其中大学生志愿者260人，分别来自上外、复旦、交大、华师大、同济和上理六所高校。上海外国语大学共有91名（实际上岗60人）大学生志愿者参与其中，涉及的语种有英语、阿拉伯语、俄语、日语、土耳其语、波斯语、蒙古语共七个语种，为参与人数及涉及语种最多的高校。孙信伟、李磊荣、杨波、吴爱荣、李利群、程彤等来自学校机关、俄语系和东方语学院的多位教师参与了会议的翻译、接待等志愿服务工作。上海外国语大学的师生不仅发挥了其语言优势，更凭借着对各国文化习俗的了解，对当今政治局势的敏感度，以及他们热情、负责的志愿者精神，成为亚信峰会筹备过程中坚实的背影。
上外学生主要分布在新闻组、外交部相关组、综合事务组、礼宾组、秘书组和会务组等。新闻组志愿者在新闻中心，重复着琐碎而忙碌的工作；外交部相关组的志愿者同学和老师作为随从翻译，接团跟团，奔走在前线；综合事务组志愿者在机场进行接机、迎宾，工作岗位重要；会务组和礼宾组的志愿者们虽始终未能踏进会场，但仍坚持在后方办***、处理行程……志愿者们用自己的实际行动，演绎志愿精神，履行国家责任。
我校党委、团委以及相关院系分团委都非常重视这次亚信峰会的志愿者活动，为各志愿者组织培训，开展讲座，并做好了调课和后勤保障安排，希望在第一线的每一位同学和老师都能够深刻理解自己肩上所担负的使命，也能安全无虑地投入志愿者工作。
礼宾组的勾雯琳同学说：“虽然我们只是一名普通的志愿者，虽然我们的工作琐碎而繁重，但是能够成为这场外交盛会中的一份子，还是令人感觉骄傲和自豪。”作为一场盛会中的小小螺丝钉，每一位志愿者的默默付出汇聚起来，向世界展现了中国大学生最佳的风采，体现了我们坚实的责任与担当。（包佳霖）

SISU Students Volunteer for CICA Shanghai Summit

ixty students from Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) volunteered to work at the fourth summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), held May 20-21 in Shanghai.
SISU supplied the most student volunteers, and spoke the most languages, among 260 students from six Shanghai universities. Students interpreted English, Arabic, Russian, Japanese, Turkish, Persian, Mongolian, and other languages. Many SISU professors also volunteered as interpreters, greeters and in other capacities.
Diplomacy is No Small Matter
At CICA, Zhang Yuyou, a SISU master’s degree student in International Relations, classified materials of foreign affairs in a “confidential room” of Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office. “Miscellaneous though the work is, it inspires a sense of responsibility. It is the first time that I feel the joy by integrating theory with practice,” he said.
But Zhang also worked under strict rules. Zhang said after receiving materials, volunteers had to classify them according to security levels, sources and contents, and then each document was backed up before being handed to corresponding workers.
Volunteer Yu Xiaoqing, Zhang’s classmate, was responsible for printing and making various forms and files in the same office’s printing room. “Diplomacy is no small matter” was the first sentence his fellow workers used to greet him.
“It was the first time that I am stricken by the meticulousness required in dealing with foreign affairs. I am actually feeling the importance of details,” he said, “In the meeting agendas and handbooks, all details, including foreign guests’ cultural taboos, diet taboos and even their spouses’ physical conditions, have been paid attention to, because they are important to successful meetings.”
More than Languages
To practice their comprehensive practical language skills, SISU students also volunteered at CICA to work at reception and with the news media.
To assist journalists, Ma Tao, a SISU master’s degree student in the Arabic language, traveled daily from SISU’s Songjiang campus to the Press Center in the Pudong District. Her job was providing consulting service for foreign journalists and helping them to fill out forms.
Ma said: “Although having not been on this position for a long time, I have already realized it is not easy to do well in journalism. A report that lasts only a few minutes usually needs a dozen people to prepare for a couple of hours. I should be familiar with the entire workflow of the Press Center, and remember the accurate timing of each task and the persons in charge.”
Zhu Ziyuan, a volunteer in SISU’s Russian major, worked in CICA’s Accreditation Center and the Press Center’s shuttle group. “The volunteer experience gave me the opportunity to learn other generic skills, including classifying materials and accompanying on buses. My work does not seem to be technical, but in fact it is quite complex in practice. I think volunteers should prepare for all kinds of tasks, especially trivial ones, so that they can learn more skills, which is helpful to get a job.”
Disregard Gain or Loss
To be a CICA volunteer, students survived numerous difficult tests. Even so, not all of them were lucky enough to be where conferences were held and run into national leaders. In fact, most volunteers were doing only simple but exacting work. Many felt a little disappointed, and felt “sorry [they] cannot help more.”
Volunteer Liu Yi, a student in SISU’s School of Japanese Studies, worked in general tasks of the Press Center, which kept her away from the floor of the conferences. “I came to see President Xi Jinping, but the wish ended with working at the Press Center’s reception. I thought my foreign language skills could have been given into full play, but the Chinese language became my working language here,” she said, “I was a little disappointed, but what I really regretted is that I could not contribute more. It is really my honor to participate in this great event and I feel happy to meet a group of like-minded friends.”
Her co-worker, Min Jinghan, said, “I felt happy to bring convenience to foreign reporters.”
Zhu Yuqian, a SISU master’s degree student in the Russian language, said, “No matter students or teachers, everyone around us makes efforts to contribute to the summit. As a CICA’s volunteer and a representative of Shanghai’s youths, I hope our effort can lead the new generation to shoulder more.”
